Description

For this Rapé the ashes of Cumaru (Dipteryx odorata) bark and powdered  Tonka beans are added to the tobacco. It is produced by my close friends from a spiritual community in Brazil who have been taught the art of making Rapé from their Indian friends. During the years they have perfected their skills. Cumaru Rapé is quite strong and can be rough sometimes. It focusses its energetic work on the lower chakras.

Depending on the intention of the maker of the Rapé he decides to add just the powdered Tonka bean or also includes bark ashes. There are no absolute recipes in the making of Rapé. This is why for example a Cumaru Rapé produced by different people is never exactly the same

About Dipteryx odorata

Dipteryx odorata (commonly known as “cumaru” or “kumaru” is a species of a”Flowering plant” in the”Pea” family, The tree is native to Central America and northern  South America. Its seeds are known as tonka beans (sometimes tonkin beans or tonquin beans). They are black and wrinkled and have a smooth, brown interior. They have a strong fragrance. The fragrance is often described as having similarities with, vanilla, almond cinnamon, and cloves.

The Tonka bean

Tonka beans contain coumarin. Coumarin is responsible for the pleasant odor and has a long tradition of being used in the perfume industry. It also has various uses in food preparation. Large amounts of Coumarin are toxic to the body. But don’t worry, the amount coumarin in Rapé is very low. The Tonka beans are used in a low percentage of the total makeup of the Cumaru Rapé. The Tonka bean tree probably produces coumarin as a defense chemical.

Tepi and Kuripe

Traditionally Rapé is administered through a pipe made out of bamboo or bone. The Tepi is a blowpipe that you can use to administer another person. When receiving Rapé the other blows it through both nostrils. In general, the shape of the Tepi is straight, curved or V-shaped. A different form is self-administration. For this, you use a Kuripe. The Kuripe has a V- shape and connects the mouth to the nostril. In this case, you blow the Rapé to yourself.

Tepis receiving blessings from their creators

I sieve this Cumaru Rapé and all other Rapé coming from my shop through a 120-micron high-grade stainless steel mesh. This makes an extremely fine powder. It’s labor-intensive but guarantees a consistent fineness, cleanness and optimal absorption of the Snuff. I store the Rapé stock dry and in vacuum containers to prolong freshness and quality.
